Hole
#3 is where the course begins. Most of us have gotten
through holes 1 and 2 without a problem, so let's not ruin our
round early with a big number on #3. Play this hole as a Par 5.
This sounds outrageous, but I'm sure many of you have made a
higher number than this on this hole more than once. First of
all, hitting the fairway is imperative. If you miss to the right, you
are in trees you cannot hit out of, and you have already wasted a
shot taking a drop. There is a lot of room on the left if you are
going to miss.
What club you choose depends on #1 & #2. If you are hitting
the driver well, get up there with confidence, pick your target,
and hit it in the fairway. If your swing is still on the range,
pick up a club that will keep you in the short stuff and swing
smooth. If you have hit the fairway, pick the club you need and
just aim for the center of the green. If you miss down in the gully left or over to the right, it is too early to be a hero.
Just take a lofted club, like the 7-iron, and get down there in the fairway. From there we can hit our third shot to the
right center of the green. There is severe mounding around this green, and shots will add up in a hurry if we start
aiming for the pin. Whether you are here in 2 or 3 shots, just get the correct distance on your putt. Tap in the second
putt and you have made a "Birdie" or at worst a "Par 5" on the toughest hole on the course.
